The Dutch Niels de Leeuw (Laren, 1972) better known as DJ Niels360, got first introduced to the electronic dance music boom of the Nineties when he visited party’s with upcoming and at this moment well-known international club DJs such as John Digweed, Sasha, Erick Morillo, Carl Cox and in Amsterdam Marcello, Jean and Dimitri behind the turntables. This moment – when he first experienced these hypnotising up-tempo beats – tempted him to start a collection of house- and dance discs himself. Frequent visits to New York, made possible by his work as a pilot for the Dutch airline KLM, led to the latest vinyl of upcoming DJ’s, in The Netherlands often still unknown. At first his record bins were mainly filled with Break Beat and Drum & Bass related tracks: LTJ Bukem, Roni Size, Johnny L and Goldie. To be later supplemented with minimal, electro, progressive and techno.
Buying records, Niels let himself be inspired by well known DJ’s as Nick Warren, Darren Emerson, Kevin Saunderson, Josh Wink and the Chemical Brothers. But later on tracks from DJ/producers as Jay Lumen, Olivier Giacamotto, DJ Smilk, Chus, Wady also influenced his music choice. In 1997 his interest in electronic music progressed into a passion for Techno and he made it his mission to follow into his hero’s footsteps, promptly acquired his first set of turntables and put himself behind the wheels of steel. At first mainly to entertain his friends at home. His talent for beat-matching and spinning the crowd did not go unnoticed and soon his first gig as a DJ in the club circuit of Amsterdam was a fact.
In The Netherlands Niels360 played his sets on numerous parties in several well known bars and clubs. In the Netherlands: Escape, Panama, Club Air, Club NL, Werck, Boom Chicago, Hotel Arena, Vak Zuid, De Republiek, Bloomingdale and Beach Club Vroeger. But also internationally the list is a long one: Flylounge DC (Washington), NY Party Hotel El Panama (Panama City), City Café, Little Havana’s and Atlantic Beach (Bonaire), Baja (Colombia), Minna Gallery (San Francisco), Shore club Skybar (Miami). Niels spinned together with famous DJ’s as Erick E, Gregor Salto, Ryan Marciano, Sunnery James & Lucien Foort, Funkerman, Mark van Dale, Shermanology, Raymundo, DJ Enferno (World runner up MTV DJ mixing Contest) and many others.
In 2010 after a study at the SAE Institute in Amsterdam, Niels started producing his own independent tracks at his studio at home. His first track- Mind your Step – got released with the prominent New York techno label ‘ Nervous NYC ‘ in 2011. Recognition followed several months later when this dance track ended up in the higher regions of the charts. Sometime after his first release Niels was being asked to compose and produce the remix of the song ‘Vamos a la Playa’ for the ‘Queen of Latin Pop’ Loona. Another dance hit followed. Policia, released in 2011 hit the charts again and already reached more than 50.000 hits on Youtube.
Niels also produced numerous DJ-mixes: Number one, Life after thirty, Bonaire Sessions, Appetizer, Pink Champagne, The Sound of Pleasure, Retox 360 & his most recent one ReToX2.
His work as pilot Boeing 777 is the perfect combination with his passion for entertainment. This became clear when he was asked to fly the inaugural KLM flight from Amsterdam to Miami. During this trip the record for ‘Highest Altitude Dance party’ got established and credited in the Guinness Book of World Records. (YouTube Fly2Miami). His own gig on an after party at the Miami Dance Conference was the climax of this memorable day.
During his 15 year long career as a DJ, Niels developed himself in what he calls ‘a real crowd DJ who knows exactly how to entertain the audience.’ Depending on the party and the guests he spins from House to Dance, from Tech House to Techno and everything in between. Niels uses his own independent mix style of club classics and all forms of house/dance tracks to get the younger and older ones moving and shaking on the dance floor. Because of this capacities he is a frequently asked and beloved DJ and irreplaceable to the scene.
